AMA – Friday 21st (7pm EDT) – former WoW developers John Staats (dungeons and instances), Kevin Jordan (classes and spells) and David Ray (tools and database) !

Description

We are excited to be hosting an AMA with the original World of Warcraft developers Johnathan Staats, author of the World of Warcraft Diary, David Ray and Kevin Jordan ! This will take place this Friday 21st at 7pm EDT (click here for conversion in your time zone).

  • John Staats (/u/whenitsready) was the first Level Designer on World of Warcraft. From Vanilla to Wrath of the Lich King, he notably built famous instances such as Molten Core, Ahn'Qiraj, Scholomance, and so on.

  • David Ray (/u/SecretPyaray) was the Senior Tool & Database Programmer for Vanilla and The Burning Crusade. He worked on the databases, the server-side of the quest system, mapping and exploration systems, and customer service tools.

  • Kevin Jordan (/u/FailureAndAnalysis) was one of the three original Game Designers who laid the foundation for game systems, focused on character classes, talents, spells and abilities. He essentially created all the spells of all classes for Vanilla WoW.

You will be able to ask them anything, notably about the creation of World of Warcraft, including what they did, how they did it, and how things worked, whether on the technical side or the conceptual one, about the challenges they had to overcome, the solutions they found, ideas they may have had, so on and so forth !

World of Warcraft Diary

With Blizzard's approval, Staats has decided to compile the great amount of notes he took all throughout the development of the successful MMORPG into the World of Warcraft Diary. The book provides a unique, detailed look into the development of World of Warcraft, from conceptualizing to implementing.

It reveals never-seen-before information on World of Warcraft, provides insight into the life of Blizzard developers, and tackles the great themes of game development in general including lore and gameplay.

This project is funded entirely via a Kickstarter. The book will first be sent to the Kickstarter backers (along with some Kickstarter-exclusive rewards) before being put on Amazon !

See you Friday for the AMA !
